At Least 6 Lose Their Lives in Stampede at Ghanaian Armed Forces Enlistment Drive

At least six people have lost their lives during a crowd crush at a military recruitment gathering held in a stadium in Ghana.

The Wednesday's "tragic" incident seems to have been caused by "an unexpected surge of candidates who breached security protocols and rushed into the entrances," stated a statement from the nation's military.

22 additional individuals were injured, among them 5 who are in serious state.

Thousands had gathered at El-Wak stadium, in the capital, the capital, with the hope of enlisting in the armed forces.

Ghana has a youth unemployment rate of approximately thirty-two percent, the latest official data show, and such recruitment events typically draw massive gatherings and frequently lead to chaotic scenes.

The deadline to submit applications for this recruitment was extended by a week to allow for additional candidates, as some had faced challenges in the application procedure.

Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin stated the stampede occurred ahead of the event's scheduled start of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.

Calm has been reestablished, and the recruitment exercise has now started.
