Boots: A Surprise Hit That Highlights Military Homophobia

Within the expansive world of streaming, countless shows struggle to gain attention. At first, Boots appeared headed to be overlooked. Yet, due to rave critical reception and strong word-of-mouth, it has quickly climbed to rank as a leading show on Netflix.

The Story Behind Boots?

The show draws from a former marine’s 2015 memoir called The Pink Marine. It follows a young man’s service in the US military in 1990. That period was a few years before the widely debated military policy was established as the rule for LGBTQ+ personnel.

The subject matter holds significant potential, as demonstrated by series like that previously tackled similar themes. Viewers undoubtedly held great hopes for Boots.

Powerful Elements

When the series focuses on its main subject, it rises to remarkably powerful television. The main character, a new recruit from a difficult family, joins up largely out of spite.

But, the heart of the series lies in the NCO role, a promising non-commissioned officer whose future is threatened due to a probe about his orientation. His acting is extraordinary: tense yet full of fury, before scenes reveal his vulnerabilities.

This aspect of the show warrants all the acclaim it gets. The show’s skill to drive home its themes via personal stories is incredibly impactful. It’s hard to view and not feel a sense of frustration and scorn toward the bias imposed on military personnel.

Contradictions and Shortcomings

The issue stems from this powerful narrative only makes up some of the show. The rest seem to celebrate military life to an extent which is comparable to promotional material.

Although the series includes moments reminiscent of intense training depictions, such elements are frequently weakened by sentimental lines or unrealistic portrayals. Disputes are resolved in oddly playful ways, including a messy confrontation inspired by a musical comedy.

Split Identity

The primary flaw of the show is that its serious along with angry moments are diluted by a desire to emulate the success of other hit shows.

While Boots advances, it shifts toward primarily an ensemble piece about a fish out of water adapting to his environment amid a strict military structure. The show also incorporates flashbacks to explain the cast, though they come across as redundant or randomly inserted.

Overall Impression

The series functions as two separate narratives battling for screen time. Firstly, it offers a hard-hitting critique of military homophobia. On the other, it often veers into a light tale featuring bonding and character development.

Although the lighter side could make a solid series by itself, the shortcoming to blend these two elements into a cohesive whole seems a wasted chance. The series had a significant message to say, however it sadly weakening its punch.
