Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
