Harsh Winter Storms Claim 5 Lives in the Gaza Strip Amid Dire Conditions in Makeshift Shelters.

Powerful cold-season winds brought walls down onto flimsy shelters housing people displaced by war in Gaza, killing at least four individuals. This tragedy underscores the dangerous situation that persist after more than two years of devastating airstrikes and severe lack of humanitarian assistance.

Ceasefire Provides No Respite from Harsh Elements

While a ceasefire has been active from last fall, humanitarian organizations report that Palestinians broadly lack the sufficient housing necessary to survive frequent winter storms.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which took in the bodies, said on Tuesday that the deceased were two women, a young female, and a man.

In a separate incident, the local health authority stated on the same day that a one-year-old boy died of extreme cold overnight.

"The world has allowed us to experience death in all its forms," stated a family member following the burial. "It’s true the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, 3 people of a one household — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his son's wife — were killed when an eight-metre high wall collapsed onto their dwelling in a area near the sea of Gaza City. No fewer than 5 others were injured in the event.

Family members on Tuesday started removing the debris that had entombed their loved ones and rebuilding the temporary homes for survivors.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were distributing shelter kits, tarps, warm covers and clothing as well as food and hygiene items across Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

Those figures, he said, reflected incidents where sufficient details had been compiled to justify documentation, but the overall count is believed to be greater. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'bombings and shootings have slowed' under the ceasefire, they have not stopped," Elder informed journalists at a UN briefing in Geneva by video link from Gaza City. "Therefore what the international community now calls quiet would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he said.

Third Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s population of over 2 million individuals has been fighting to keep the cold weather and bad weather at bay while facing shortages of humanitarian aid and a absence of more substantial temporary housing, which is urgently needed during the colder season. This marks the third cold season after the conflict involving the state and Hamas started on a date in late 2023, when militants stormed into Israeli territory and killed approximately twelve hundred people and took hostage 251 others into Gaza.
