Locating a Venezuela-linked Tanker Reportedly Pursued by American Maritime Authorities

Our team is checking images and video circulated this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.

The initial step to verify the site of where the images originated relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.

Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
