Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
