Rory McIlroy salutes Sports Personality success with individual and team accolades.

Just prior to he was crowned, a anxious worry darted through his mind. He admitted he was hoping, "Not a Formula 1 star again."

"It's been a fantastic night for golf," McIlroy declared. "The sport was honored in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and with any luck we can build upon that."

In this instance, however, there was no late twist. The verdict was clear, allowing a delighted McIlroy to enjoy a blockbuster evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were honored as team of the year.

A Whirlwind Schedule

But rather than attend the official reception, McIlroy was already focusing on his upcoming event. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and flown to the UK, he was returning immediately to Miami.

"It's been a frantic 24 hours," McIlroy explained. "I am anticipating a little bit of rest over Christmas."

Drive to Improve

However, McIlroy stated he has no plans to rest on his laurels, despite achieving the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a more to give in me," he claimed.

"More majors, season-long rankings, international events, that's great. But if you feel like you can keep progressing and have the desire, that's the most important thing."

Collective Honor

Elsewhere, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the collective trophy, also applauded golf's exceptional night and his pal's award.

"Those are the moments that will remain with us indefinitely so to get the people's vote for that is amazing," Fleetwood said. "Witnessing it Rory win, I think he deserves it so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third golfer to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood smiled before joking, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"

Future Goals

His goal is to secure his maiden major next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "If you want to be the best you can be, and you're still driven, you'll find things to improve," Fleetwood explained.

Football Loyalty

Prior to his departure, a last query was raised. As a huge Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be persuaded to do it again after his latest triumphs?

"Provided that they stop conceding multiple scores in Manchester," McIlroy responded with a grin. "Improvements are being made. There's a touch of hope around."

After a remarkable year, it's little surprise that Rory McIlroy is focusing on the bright side.
