Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Selection in English Test Series Team

The English team has chosen a 12-man squad just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a unexpected place.

Bashir's selection suggests that the tourists will wait until the morning of the first Test to decide whether the venue conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.

Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man squad, showing there are no concerns about either fast bowler's condition.

The other seamers complete the bowling group, with Carse expected to miss out if the spinner enters the starting XI.

Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers

Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five past matches.

In those games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.

On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers remains the more likely choice.

Alternative Choices Considered

Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to offer some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.

But McCullum has opted to stick with Bashir, having stated previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the series.

In July, Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they come out and perform well out here.”
