Zak Crawley – 1

Expected in Australian pitches but managed only a rare duck in both innings by an English opener in just a handful of deliveries.

Ben Duckett – 5

Got starts during each knock. The way he got out on Saturday marked the point when it began to unravel for England.

Ollie Pope – 6

Seems better for adjustments to his technique. Opening match in the series is usually his strongest, after which his form dips. England need him to build on this.

Joe Root – One

Far away from his maiden century on Australian soil. The side need the wisdom of their best player to have any chance to come back from this defeat.

Harry Brook – Five

His half-century in the first innings was skittish, but valuable. Poor choice in the follow-on.

Ben Stokes – 6

Returned after being injured with a five-wicket haul, though appeared short of rhythm when batting. Lost control in the field in the face of Head's aggressive batting.

Smith – 4

Might possess the game for Australia, yet must to smarten up. Will likely face plenty of bouncers from now on.

Gus Atkinson – 5

Involved in the strong English first-innings bowling effort and tried to carry the fight while batting in the second innings. Among the bowlers that fell apart on Saturday evening.

Brydon Carse – Five

Similar to the previous, plus the mustard of being taken apart by Head.

Jofra Archer – 5

Appeared impressive while bowling initially and proved the top of a bad bunch in the second. Could still play a key role on the series.

Wood – Five

Finished without a wicket, yet extremely commendable to even get on the field considering his time away.

Australia Player Evaluations

Jake Weatherald – 6

First-timer was unlucky to be exposed against Archer early on, then played his part in the sensational run chase.

Usman Khawaja – 3

An unusual match. Did not look fully fit and had time off the field. Took several key catches in the slips, yet also seemed immobile in the cordon. Gets a mark for the injury which enabled Travis Head to bat as opener.

Labuschagne – Seven

A successful return to the team. Handled England's pressure more effectively than others initially, and supported Head in the second.

Smith – Five

Seemed off form in the first innings. Unnecessary pre-match comments about Panesar.

Head – Nine

Possibly churlish not to get a perfect score, however he played a pretty poor stroke initially. His second-innings century was an all-time great innings.

Cameron Green – Five

Claimed the crucial dismissal of Ollie Pope in the first innings. Shaken by one Mark Wood bouncer when he batted. Barely required later in the match.

Carey – Five

Attempted an aggressive response versus England's bowlers early in the match. Neat behind the stumps.

Mitchell Starc – Nine

Carried the weight of the attack without Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood achieving the first Aussie Ashes series 10-wicket haul for two decades.

Scott Boland – Six

Short of his best in the first innings. Improved later to spark the England collapse.

Doggett – 6

Steady first appearance. Quite capable stand-in for Cummins and Hazlewood.

Nathan Lyon – Two

Almost an onlooker during a game controlled by pace. Possibly picked up a knock when struck by Mark Wood.
