The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
