This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
