The nation's top court has refused an appeal from Alex Jones and upheld his massive financial sanction that was awarded to the victims' relatives from the mass shooting at Sandy Hook.
Background of the Court Ruling
The media personality had attempted to reverse the court decision, which he was ordered to pay after he disseminated inaccuracies about the massacre.
Jones had earlier asserted the elementary school attack where students and staff members were murdered was a staged event orchestrated by performers to advocate for gun regulations.
The Sandy Hook victims' survivors testified that Jones's lies led to intimidation from his audience, making it challenging for them to recover from the mass murder.
Court Action
The judicial body did not offer justification for its ruling, according to its official document published on this week.
As part of his court challenge filed in September, Jones contended that a court official was mistaken to hold him responsible for defamation and infliction of emotional distress without holding a trial.
Jones maintained that the financial ruling "represents an impossible sum", adding that "the outcome is a financial death penalty through decree placed upon a media defendant whose program attracts large audiences".
Financial Situation
Jones and his media organization, his company, entered Chapter 11 in recently after the huge judgment following lawsuits initiated in Connecticut and Texas.
A financial review into corporate paperwork revealed that he had transferred assets worth significant sums away from claimants as court proceedings from the affected parties along with legal penalties stacked up against him over the preceding timeframe.
Meanwhile, in recent months, the trustee handling Jones's financial proceedings claimed of trying to hide over five million dollars from claimants.
Attorney Statement
In a comment on the supreme court's ruling, the families' attorney, an lawyer representing the victims' families, said: "The highest court appropriately dismissed his recent effort to escape responsibility for the distress he has caused. We anticipate enforcing the jury's historic verdict and securing payment for what they have committed."
