What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
